Poetry Project Curatorial Fellowship

Year: 2021
Poetry Project

In 2021, Tierra Narrative (represented by Maryam Ivette Parhizkar and Óscar Moisés Díaz) held the inaugural curatorial fellowship at the The Poetry Project in New York City.  Tierra Narrative produced a series of three virtual events that brought together poetry, film, and performance from Central America and its  diasporas. In collaboration with Jen/Eleana Hofer, Alexia Veytia-Rubio, JD Pluecker, Isela Ibarra, and Larissa Brothers, these events were made fully accessible in both Spanish and English using a language justice framework

An evening with Cuirpoétikas

Based in Guatemala City, Cuirpoétikas is a platform for exchange of artistic and poetic ideas, dialogue and research on sexual dissidence from a queer perspective. Tierra Narrative collaborated with Cuirpoétikas to produce an event of queer poets in Central America to share their work, followed by a conversation around queer small press/DIY publishing, poetic lineages, and community history. Featuring Dada Alguien, Rodrigo Arenas-Carter, Marielos Olivo, Fabrizio Quemé, Kenny Rodríguez, and Manuel Tzoc Bucup.

Isthmus Dream Transits

As an embodiment of dreaming, how can poetry alter our relationships to colonial geographies and their spectral residues? Featuring readings by Shyanne Figueroa Bennett, Edgar García, and Wingston Gonzalez, this reading and moderated conversation brought together poets whose works trace alternate cartographies of Central America and the Caribbean through dream-work and re-visions of history, ancestry and time.

Archives of Salvadoran Cinema

Tierra Narrative invited three Salvadoran/diaspora poets––Lauri García Dueñas, Raquel Gutierrez, and Elena Salamanca––to write alongside films housed by El Museo de la Palabra y La Imagen in San Salvador, an institution dedicated to collecting and preserving memories of the Salvadoran civil war. In addition to readings, Tierra Narrativel screened short films: El Gran Debut (1976) by Baltazar Polío in collaboration with Teatro Grupo Independiente and La Zona Intertidal (1980) by collective Los Vagos.
